Toyota S-FR Concept

The small and back-to-basics sports car markets is going through a bit of a renaissance these days, thanks to the Toyota/Subaru/Scion GT-86/BRZ/FR-S and the newly introduced fourth generation Mazda MX-5 Miata. Japan seems to have really embraced the idea of these small cars that highlight driving dynamics and handling for maximum driver enjoyment over ludicrous amounts of horsepower and outlandish stylish that’s priced out of us mere mortal’s reach.

Hot off the press is the introduction of the Toyota S-FR Concept, a cutesy looking car that seems to pack a real punch when it comes to the back-to-basics sports car formula. Styled like a Pixar character rather than a serious and mean sports car, the Toyota S-FR Concept has rounded and bubbly looks that seems to embody the childish fun drivers will get to experience behind its wheel.

Weighing in at just 2,160 lbs, the 1.5-liter 130 bhp engine should be enough to get the car moving at a brisk pace. While it’s not going to wow anyone with its acceleration or top speed, given that it’s big brother is the Toyota GT-86 it should offer quite an entertaining ride and value in terms of smiles-per-hour.

Currently slated to be introduced at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, it is unclear whether the car will go into production. Even if it does, there has been no say whether it will be available outside of Japan, which is realistically a remote possibility. The looks of the Toyota S-FR Concept scream production ready rather than concept car, so we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed.
