Nikon introduces their highly anticipated D850 from their enthusiast line of DSLRs, and the resulting product packs an impressive punch.

The Nikon D850 packs most of the flagship D5’s capabilities into a much smaller package. While pixel count isn’t everything, the D850 features a 45.7 megapixel full-frame sensor — compared to its predecessor D810’s 36 megapixels and the professional grade D5’s 20 megapixels — in a slimmer size than the D810.

The 153-point autofocus system adopted straight from the super fast D5, a maximum burst rate of 9 fps, and a buffer that can withstand 51 raw images make the D850 an excellent choice for sports photography. The D850 can also shoot 4K video and boasts the largest optical viewfinder from Nikon. Dynamic range, high ISO capabilities, and battery life are all excellent, like a modern champ. Speaking of modern, the D850 is also equipped with built-in Wi-Fi, a tilting touch LCD screen, 120 fps slow motion capabilities, and a Focus Shift mode (that takes the same shot 300 times in different focus settings so you can pick out the one with the best focus), which is very useful for macro photography in which the slightest breeze on that petal could knock it out of focus completely.

The D850 is comparable to Nikon’s current flagship model D5, and perhaps even to medium format cameras. Overall, this is an outstanding all-around camera, the kind that makes us very excited for the future of photography.
