On a recent weekend trip to Montreal, we were exploring the city’s Mile End neighborhood after brunch when we stumbled upon Clark Street Mercantile, a haven of high quality menswear and handpicked housewares. With the goal of bringing people closer to the products they buy and educating customers on the heritage of the brands they carry, Clark Street Mercantile carries items you won’t find anywhere else in the city. We spoke with owner Scott Meleskie who told us a bit more about the brand, what’s in store for the future, and his must-visit spots in Montreal.

When did CSM open and what is the concept behind the store?

Clark Street Mercantile opened in the summer of 2013. The concept was/is to bring people closer to the products they buy, to tell the story of the brand or manufacturing process that goes into making the products, with the hope that people will really take pride in the goods they buy, and keep them for a long long time.

How do you decide what brands and products you carry?

That story, whether it be the people behind the brand, or the heritage of the brand itself is very important in our selection. We obviously are always looking for well-crafted products to carry in the shop, product made to last. We also try to carry products that no other shop in Montreal carries. We like for our destination to have a completely unique experience.

Why the focus on craftsmanship? And how does this affect the products you carry?

The focus on craftsmanship and knowledge of where the products you buy come from is something that we feel is really important, not only to counteract the fast-fashion consumerism that is so prevalent, but to support local & skilled artisans that put so much time & effort into their trades. Most of the brands we carry are small, independent brands that are doing great things.

What sets the shop apart from other menswear stores in Montreal?

Our selection of brands and products is the main differentiating factor. The fact we try to carry different brands than everyone else is an obvious difference, but also our selections are mostly geared towards that young professional who doesn’t want to dress in a suit, but is also sick of wearing graphic tees and jeans.

What are some up-and-coming brands you’re most excited about?

Our favourite brand at the moment is a Japanese brand called Still by Hand. They are relatively new to North America, and the level of detail and subtle details that go into each of their pieces is just amazing. We love everything they do!

What are your must-visit spots in Montreal?

If we were to list all our must-visit spots you’d have a very long article!! There are tons of great spots in our neighbourhood; Wilensky’s for bologna sandwiches, Kem CoBa for ice cream, Fairmount Bagel for Montreal’s famous bagels… and that’s just on our block! Taking a stroll through the Mile End is great though, you’ll find some really great independent shops, galleries, and of course restaurants.
